UGCM apprises Governor

United Gorkha Committee, Manipur (UGCM)
today met Governor V Shanmuganathan at Raj
Bhawa today and apprised him of the internal
and social grievances of Gorkha community,
reports our correspondent.
During an hour long discussion with the
Governor, United Gorkha Committee,
Manipur also submitted a copy of memoran-
dum which was earlier submitted to Chief
Minister O Ibobi Singh regarding the griev-
ances of Gorkha community.
Hari Prasad Nepal, chairman, UGCM said
that based on the Gorkha settlement in the
State which is two decades old, Gorkha
community of Manipur should be provided
a status of permanent resident of the State
and should be mentioned as Manipuri
Gorkha while drafting, finalizing and legis-
lation of new Bill.
He further said that the
Governor has positively responded the com-
mittee's proposal for erection of statue of
Gorkha martyr Subedar Niranjan Singh
Chhetri who was hanged to death by the
British on June 8, 1891 for waging war
against the British.
The committee also high-
lighted the unavailability of Gorkha village
administration authority in the hills areas of
the State particularly in Sadar Hills while
urging to instruct the authorities concerned
not to harass Gorkha community while obtaining require documents.
