Imphal, April 17 2020:
Youth's Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) has expressed concern over the ever-increasing prices of essential commodities in the State.
In a statement, YFPHR opined that many retailers contended that the rise in the price of essential items was due to closing of shops of most wholesalers and rise in petrol prices in the black market to Rs 130- Rs 160 per litre.
Lauding the Government for fixing the price of food items, YFPHR pointed out that 50 kg bag of super rice used to be available at Rs 1400 to Rs 1500 before lockdown, but now the same 50 kg bag is available at Rs 2100 to Rs 2200 .
Questioning from where they are procuring the rice when most of the wholesalers have been closed due to the lockdown, the forum appealed to the authorities concerned to check price hike of essential commodities to enforce the lockdown effectively.
On the other hand, Chamber of Commerce Imphal (CCI) has alleged that consignments of essential items that were brought in from other States have gone missing before reaching the warehouses but these items were found distributing to the public.
CCI appealed the State Government and authorities concerned to look into the matter and also asked local retailers and wholesalers not to hike prices of essential commodities at such trying time.
