Storm kills over 500 chickens

Saying that the storm that occurred this morning at around 7 had completely destroyed his poultry farm at the foothill of Khonghampat and killed over 500 chickens, Chongtham Dhurbatara Khaba appealed the State Government to look into the matter and provide some assistance as a mark of encouragement to the poultry farmers of the State.
Speaking to media persons at Khonghampat Awang Leikai, Khaba said that the farm located at the foothill of the western side of Khonghampat, popularly known as Oksu Khamaral, measured around 270x45fts.The poultry house was made of wood and covered by tin sheets, he added.
His friends who were nearby at the time of incident rescued most of the chickens but over 500 were killed when the poultry house collapsed, he said.
The chickens were 44 days old and were supposed to be sold tomorrow, he added.
The farm currently employs 6 staffs and has several units in different locations employing over 120 individuals, he said adding that the construction of the said poultry farm had cost him about Rs 17 lakh.
It may be mentioned that a strong cyclonic storm on Monday had claimed lives of three women.
Many houses, schools and farms were swept away and damaged in the storm.
The extent of damage done is not known yet.
