Imphal, October 16 2011:
Labour Minister Pheiroijam Parijat today called for amendment of the Manipur Shops and Establishment Act 1972 Rule 1973 if the act failed to deliver justice to the labourers being employed in the various shops and establishments in the state.
Parijat was speaking as the Chief Guest at the 5th Annual Conference of All Manipur Shops and Establishment Employee Association held at Irawat Bhavan, BT Road, Imphal today.
Speaking on the occasion, Parijat said that the act should be amended by deleting unsuitable clauses and by inserting new clauses for the welfare of the employees of the various shops and establishments of the state.
He also urged the employees of such shops and establishments to digest the act and do their duty as an employee.
The act meant to rein in the shop owners from exploiting their employees.
While lauding the efforts of the association to get maximum benefits of such employees under the act, he expressed his desire to strengthen the association for the rights of the employees of shops and establishments.
Reminding that the government has fixed the daily wages of a labour in un-organised sector to Rs 122, L Sotinkumar, General Secretary Manipur State Council of All India Trade Union Congress urged the association to expand its area of operation beyond the Imphal city and provide the benefits of the act to similar employees outside the capital city area.
He also said that the wages of such employees should be fixed as per the price rise in the Consumer Price Index.
S Chandramni, President of the association appealed to the state government to take up initiatives and instruct all establishments to provide minimum wages to its employees.
He also appealed to set up a separate labour court to deal with labour related cases and instruct the establishments to provide festival allowances, bonus, overtime wages, Sunday holidays and other general holidays to the employees.
New office bearers of the association for the term of 2011-12 were also declared during the conference.
