Awareness programme on drug abuse and alcoholism held at Kha-Potsangbam

As part of the ongoing campaign spearheaded by Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) to fight and curb the menace of drugs and alcoholism in different parts of the State, a public awareness programme jointly organized by CADA Kha-Potsangbam Unit in association with CADA Bishnupur District Committee was held on the theme "Impact of drugs and alcohols in society and role of public to curb the menace" at Kha-Potsangbam ward no 8 in Bishnupur district on August 13 at around 2 pm.
The programme was attended by Elangbam Nupimacha, Senior Meira Paibee; Hijam Priyokumar, president CADA and Huiningsungbam (o) Basanti, president CADA Bishnupur District Committee as presidium members while Ningthoujam Doren, vice-president CADA and Geetchandra Mangang, Secy General CADA spoke on the occasion as resource persons.
Speaking at the occasion, Ningthoujam Doren said that widespread used of drugs and other intoxicants started since early 1970s in Manipur and is now quite rampant even though extensive campaign against drug abuse and alcoholism was initiated across the State by the women folks and club members to eliminate its use in the State.
"Right now Manipur has about 44,000 HIV/AIDS infected persons which is one of the highest among the states of India in terms of its proliferation", he added.
He also expressed concerned about the rapid rise of women population indulging in drugs and alcoholism which stand at 6% as per a survey report conducted across India while adding that the trend is quite alarming as women take major responsibility in giving birth and taking care of children.
