KCP Nando escape case: Further remand for AR man

Chief Judicial Magistrate Imphal East remanded Ningthoujam Shankar, personnel of 26 Assam Rifle Khongjom Post, to 9 days in police custody yesterday, in connection with the escape of KCP Nando from JNIMS.
Ningthoujam Shankar (36) s/o N Ingocha of Heirok Part II bazaar, was formally arrested by a team of Porompat police when he was produced before the Court, in connection with the placing of a bomb at a jewellery shop at Hatta Minuthong and supplying of mobile handset to Thokchom Nando (leader of KCP Nando) during his stay at JNIMS male ortho ward.
It may be mentioned that he was produced before the Court along with a prayer for remanding him in judicial custody and at that time, another team of Porompat PS filed an application for his formal arrest which the Court approved.
The accused was produced before the Court along with a prayer for 9 days in police custody for proper investigation of the case and during the hearing, the IO of the case submitted that on March 27, at around 5 pm, OC Porompat PS, registered a suo motto case explaining that on the same day, an information was received that some police personnel and jail staff of Sajiwa Central Jail along with some unknown ladies had aided Nando in carrying out in prejudicial activities.
During the course of investigation, it was ascertained that Aheibam Rameshwor of Moidangpok Maning Leikai, Yumnam Rajesh of Sagolband Meino Leirak, Hungyo Rockson of Nambashi Khullen, Khagembam Arundas of Thoubal Athokpam, Leinlalzon Singson of B Vengnom Churachandpur, Khagembam Naobi of Thoubal Athokpam Mayai Leikai, M Washington Seiyao of Khulimol village, Chandel, Irom Abe Devi of Pungdongbam Mayai Leikai and Kh Anjali of Sagolmang Mamang leikai, had links with Th Nando while he was undergoing treatment at JNIMS hospital.
In further course of the investigation, accused Ningthoujam Shankar, a personnel of 26 Assam Rifles Khongjom post, was called for examination after seeking prior sanction from the authority concerned and accordingly, he was examined on June 7 .
During the examination, Shankar disclosed that he had visited Nando at JNIMS frequently without seeking permission from the authority concerned and it was further revealed that he had helped in procuring a mobile phone for Nando.
It was also learned that Shankar is an over ground worker/ sympathizer of KCP Nando Faction and it is highly suspected that Shankar was involved in the escape of Nando in the wee hours of March 26, the IO submitted.
The IO further submitted that the N Shankar is well acquainted with the security personnel and wardens deployed for security of Thokchom Nando and they had hatched a conspiracy for extortion as well as freeing Nando from JNIMS.
The IO continued that in a news publication of one local daily, it was stated that the family members of Thokchom Nando thought that Nando had been killed and cremated at an unknown location and added that the involvement Ningthoujam Shankar in this regard is also highly suspicious.
As such, police remand of the accused is highly required to ascertain whether Nando has been killed and cremated and if not killed, then to establish his whereabouts so as to arrest him, the IO added, thus praying for remanding the accused to 9 days in police custody.
After going through the case records and the submission of the IO, the Court remanded Shankar to police custody till June 21 .
