Major smuggling attempt foiled

Imphal, December 11 2016:
An operation launched by Thinghat Battalion of Assam Rifles Churachandpur Sector, under the Red Shield Division, recovered large quantity of arms and ammunition from weapon smugglers on December 9.Based on a specific input, troops of the Thinghat Battalion launched an operation in Thinghat Sub Division under Churachandpur District on December 6.In the morning of December 9, the troops foiled a smuggling bid and apprehended two Myanmarese Nationals who were attempting to smuggle a total of 10 weapons including four MA-16 Assault Rifles, two M-3 Carbines, four AK-56 Assault Rifles, 12 magazines and 10 lakhs Myanmarese Currency, near the Indo-Myanmar International Border.
The same evening, one more attempt to smuggle arms was foiled by troops of Thinghat Battalion.
At around 3:45 pm, two suspicious persons were noticed by the troops near Songdo village.
On being checked by the troops, the smugglers ran away leaving behind a bag containing 875 rounds of 5.56 ammunition.
The recovered items have been handed over to the police for further investigation, a statement issued by PIB Defence informed.
