Imphal, July 11 2011:
Flooding of migrants in the state either legally or illegally is one of the major factors of the rapid growth of population in the state, said A Brajakumar, retired HOD, Department of Statistics, DM College of Sciences.
Brajakumar was speaking as chief guest in an observation function of the World Population Day jointly organised by the Department of Economics, MU and Manipur Economic Association at the MU Senate Hall today.
Brajakumar said that non Manipuris are flooding in the state which gives a sense of uncertainty in the minds of the indigenous people of the state with a constant fear of losing their identity.
Meanwhile, the state government is not also doing its duty sincerely.
It looks like that the concerned department of the state government is not keeping a proper record of the migration of non Manipuris from other parts of the country.
It is true that the large migration of non Manipuris was prevalent in the state only during the period of 1951 to 2001 as per the government record.
The migration rate shoots up only after the removal of ILP System from the state in 1950.The growth rate of non Manipuris in the state during 1941 to 1951 was only 12.80 percent.
However after the removal of the ILP system from the state, the growth rate of non Manipuris went upto 35.04 percent during 1951 to 1961.Most of the non Manipuris migrated in the state are businessmen and marginal workers who came here to earn their livelihood.
Vice president, Manipur Economic Association Dr E Iboyaima and Professor Bijoykumar and Dr M Hemanta of the Department of Economics, Manipur University also attended the function as presidium members.
