Imphal, January 11 2014 :
Expressing concern over rising crimes in the State even though the year 2014 has just started, Women Action for Development (WAD) has drawn the attention of the people to check the growth of rising crimes against women and children.
In a statement, Secretary of WAD Sobita Mangsatabam pointed out that in 10 days, a total of 9 crimes cases including 3 murder, 1 rape and murder, 1 rape, 1 assault, 2 infanticide, 1 found dead have been reportedly committed against women and children in Manipur.
A trend of cold blooded killing related to domestic violence has been observed in recent cases.
Infant killing also indicates the increase of pre marital affairs that leads to moral degradation of the youths committing such crimes.
Drug addiction and the culture of settlement of such heinous crimes by any MLAs/Pradhans/Councillors/Local clubs/customary laws with some amounts or by any means is one of the major factors contributing to crimes against women and children.
The criminals run scot free without any punishment and this trend further enhances the commission of more crimes in our state and in reality the victims have been victimized upon their already ensuing grievances.
So, WAD with utmost sensitivity and human touch appeals to all concerned to initiate every possible measure including structuring of Special Investigation Teams (SIT) to control the growth of crimes against women and children in the state.
WAD is also worried about the fact that if the current trend of crimes pervade at such pace, then 2014 will create the history for the maximum increase in the crime rate which are duty bound to be looked after by the concerned institutions of the State.
Therefore, it is high time to alert everyone on the issue of crimes against women and children and to check its mounting pace, Sobita said.
