Imphal, April 08 2011:
With the fixing of the date for conduct of elections to the Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) on May 25, political parties have begun making strategies for the poll.
Leaving the Congress and the CPI, the other political parties are trying for a pre-poll alliance.
The IMC was revived last month.
The MAHUD on August 9, 2010 had suspended it for six months.
MPP president Dr Nimaichand Luwang said that his party will take a major role to prevent the Congress from returning to power.
Currently, the Congress has the majority in the IMC.
A meeting of the MPP city committee and Kendra Committee has been called on April 11, Luwang said.
The MPP will field its candidates in its strongholds and will lend support to candidates of other like minded political parties, he added.
He said the MPP is willing to go with the CPI to defeat Congress candidates in the fray.
NCP president Radhabinod Koijam said that there is high expectation of the Congress receiving a humiliating defeat in the IMC election.
It is his belief that an alliance of the NCP and other will form the council after the election.
He claimed the NCP has a clear stand to bring an end to the insurgency in the state and its candidates will get overwhelming support from the people.
The NCP will not field candidates in wards where the party is considered weak and will support other candidates who will able to defeat Congress candidates.
L Basanta, media affairs secretary of BJP, Manipur Pradesh, said that it is beyond belief that Congress will get support from the people considering its performance in the last five years in the IMC areas.
People are aware that Congress misappropriated funds meant for development of Imphal city under various Central sponsored schemes.
BJP had already exposed the hidden agenda of the Congress behind placing IMC under suspension, he added.
The party will join hands with other like minded parties to defeat Congress candidates, he added.
