A cultural policy likely with establishment of Cultural University: K Radhakumar

With the establishment of a Cultural University soon, the Manipur Government has obviously begun formulation of a cultural policy of the state, Art & Culture Secretary K Radhakumar stated on Sunday.
Radhakumar was delivering a speech at the closing function of the 21st month-long training programme on Shumang Leela tradition at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen in Palace Compound in Imphal East.
He was the Chief Guest on the function and social worker S Manaoton was the President.
Chairman of Institute of Cooperative Management, Imphal, Longjam Tompishak and retired Additional Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Th Manao attended function as special invitees.
Radhakumar hailed the organizer and stated that the month-long training programme on Shumang Leela was a quite encouraging step.
The long tradition of performing arts like Shumang Leela must be upheld, he urged.
Stressing that art never dies Radhakumar said Shumang Leela will be able to promote further once the proposed Cultural University is set up.
He, however, admitted that meager fund of the State's Art & Culture Department has been hampering its activities concerning development and promotion in the field of art and culture.
Social worker S Manaoton said Shumang Leela is an excellent art form which has a close connection with the life of the people.
L Tompishak said the courtyard play depicts the existence of the Manipuri society and acknowledged that the passion of Shumang Leela rejuvenates life.
Th Manao expressed pride in the fact that Manipur had the unique performing art of Shumang Leela and he stressed the need to preserve the art form.
Media persons were also honoured with certificates and shawls on the occasion.
Artistes who had participated in the training programme performed folk dances, Thang-Ta and other cultural items.
