Hearing on Sanjit-Rabina killing case begins

Imphal, December 01 2022:
The hearing on the case of killing of Chungkham Sanjit and Thokchom Rabi-na Devi in broad daylight at Khwairamband market on July 23, 2009, commenced at the court of District and Sessions Judge, Imphal East.
After a detailed investigation by CBI and arrest of the accused person(s), the hearing commenced on Thursday to prove the charges levelled against the accused.
The CBI had submitted the charge sheet, mentioning 240 witnesses but the testimonies of only 117 witnesses were recorded in the Court.
The next hearing of the case has been fixed on December 21.It may be recalled that Sanjit was shot dead by state police commando at Khwairamband Market, BT Road on July 23, 2009, while Rabina died close to the spot where the firing incident took sparking massive protest in the state in the following days.
Ch Sanjit's mother filed a petition to Gauhati High Court requesting for the case to be handed over to CBI.
CBI subsequently registered a case and conducted the investigation, after which it submitted charge sheets against 9 accused.
On January 27, 2016, one of the accused suspended Imphal West commando head constable Thounaojam Herojit spoke to a local daily, stating that Sanjit was killed as per an order of the then Additional SP.
After this, Sanjit's mother appealed to the CBI Imphal Branch SP in writing to continue with the investigation.
However, CBI rejected the appeal, following which a writ petition was filed in 2016 to the court to direct the investigating agency to further investigate the case.
