A 45-year-old man has been injured as unidentified gunmen opened fire at him at Kwakeithel Soibam Leikai under Imphal police station yesterday.
The proscribed UNLF has claimed responsibility for the shooting.
The injured person has been identified as Laishram Sanjoy s/o Gyaneshor of Kwakeithel Soibam Leikai.
He runs a two-wheeler workshop at the gate of his house.
According to information culled from the spot, two unknown persons came in a four-wheeler vehicle at his workshop at around 1.30 pm yesterday.
Soon after they parked their vehicle near the workshop, the duo went straight to Sanjoy, who was repairing a two-wheeler vehicle.
One of the unknown persons then suddenly pulled out a pistol and pointed it at Sanjoy's head before he opened fire.
However, the bullet grazed his head as Sanjoy suddenly confronted the man moments before he pulled the trigger.
After he missed the target, the gunman fired several other rounds at Sanjoy before they fled the place.
Sanjoy was immediately rushed to RIMS as two bullets hit his right hand and right leg.
Soon after the incident, a team of Imphal West district police commandos led by Imphal West Additional SP (Operation) Th Bikramjit came at the place to investigate the incident.
Family members said that they do not have any clue about the attackers and why Sanjoy was attacked.
Saying that Sanjoy is an innocent self employed person, who simply earns his living by running a two-wheeler workshop, they urged the attackers to clarify on the incident at the earliest.
