Officials sensitised on child's rights

Various problems and rights of the children came into sharp focus as National Commission for Protection of Child Rights' Member Deepa Dixit today held discussion with State Government officials on a wide range of issues.
The meeting held at the Conference Hall of Secretariat South Block and attended by the DGP, Commissioner (Social Welfare), Commissioner (Tribal Development), Education and Home Department officials, and Deputy Commissioners of Senapati and Tamenglong districts deliberated at length on issues concerning rights of the children, impact of HIV and exploitation among others.
An official team of the National Commission headed by Deepa Dixit is currently in the State to assess the ground reality with regard to rights of the children.
The visit comes in the backdrop of a recent Supreme Court ruling based on reports about unhealthy confinement of children from Manipur in the States of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka.
According to an official source, State Government officials cited unsound socio-economic condition of the parents when the Commission Member questioned factor(s) for trafficking of children from Manipur.
Other posers raised by Deepa is informed to have been on status report of implementation concerning the Supreme Court's directive to the State Government for establishment of educational institutions at places where there are no such infrastructure as well as on provision of drinking water facilities at remote locations.
Today's meeting reportedly culminated with a decision to hold public a hearing on related issues in July this year.
A number of children from Manipur have been rescued from outside the State.
