Tamenglong district scores low on sanitation

Tamenglong district has emerged as the place with the lowest number of latrines per head in the State as per the figures listed during the Census data collection drive indicating where the people of the district stand in comparison with the rest.
This came to light during a workshop on mass awareness on Census data organised by the Directorate of Census Operations at Classic Hotel today.
Presenting his paper on drinking water and latrine, former Director of Communication and Capacity Development Unit of PHED, RK Dilip said that people of Tamenglong district maintain the least number of latrines in the State and suggested the State Government to take up special schemes so that every household of the State may maintain its own latrine.
RK Dilip further said that people of Manipur need 2 to 5 litres of drinking water a day per head and observed that the quality of water being supplied in Manipur is comparatively better than other States.
During the workshop, three resource persons presented papers on the state of housing, household amenities and assets of the people of the State, which was based on Census 2011 .
Deliberations among the officials of different State Government Departments and intellectuals was another highlight of the workshop.
Speaking at the opening session of the workshop, State Co-ordinator of Census/NPR, S Dinokumar said that data on 35 different points regarding social standard of Manipur were collected during the two-phased Census operation conducted in 2010 .
The datas collected by 6000 Enumerators and 1000 Supervisors for Census 2011 would be helpful in formulating planning for various development works which are to be taken up by the State Government in the coming years.
State Census Operations Director Y Thamkishore pointed out that these data would prove beneficial to the Planning Commission as well.
He also informed that Census data play a significant role in the preparation of schemes and projects for the welfare of the people.
Referring to the guidelines of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which directs the Governments to provide good food, house and other facilities to its citizens, Thamkishore observed that the datas would put light on the living standard of the people of a particular area or the country as a whole.
Later, HOD of Department of Bio-Statistics, RIMS, Prof RK Narendra presented paper on the state of transport and communication of the State based on Census 2011 datas.
He said that the State witnessed surge of 8.7 per cent in the number of two-wheelers, 6 per cent in light vehicles and 6.6 per cent in cycles in the last decade.
Regarding communication, Prof Narendra said that radio was the most popular medium in Manipur.
Former Director of Economics and Statistics Oinam Biren made paper presentation on the state of housing stocks and source of lighting in the workshop.
He said, although housing is included in the State List according to the Schedule 7 of Article 246, Central Government has been taking up different schemes of housing as well.
Housing population of the State has increased from 392884 in 1991 to 609964 in 2011, he added.
O Biren observed that economic condition of the people of the State witnessed considerable improvement and satisfactory success rate of housing schemes in the past two decades.
It could be well ascertained from the state of housing, he added.
