Calls for Manipuri language promotion rings loud

In commemoration of the inclusion of Manipuri language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India, Manipuri Language Day Celebration Committee (MLDCC), Imphal observed the 24th Manipuri Lon Gi Numit (Manipuri Language Day) on the theme 'Lets save Manipur; Lets preserve Manipuri language' at Lamyanba Shanglen, Palace Compound today.
Speaking on the occasion, Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Imphal president Professor Thoidingjam Tombi Singh recalled the inclusion of Manipuri Language in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India.
It was on August 20, 1991, the Professor said, exactly 24 years from today that Mani-puri language was recognised by the Indian Constitution.

Post its inclusion in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution of India, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) had termed Manipuri as a dying language.
As such, there arises a need to survey the present status of the language, the Professor said.
The Professor opined that technological advancement in the State has added to the diminishing use of the language.
The introduction of television, computers and mobile phones for example have led to intrusion by foreign words/phrases into the language.
Cultural Forum, Manipur president Professor Naorem Khogendra Singh, Naharol Sahitya Premi Samiti president Professor Polem Naba- chandra, Manipuri Language Development Committee, president Leihaothabam Saratchandra, Writers' Forum, president L Biramani, Leimarol Khorjeikol vice-president Prof N Aruna, Manipuri State Shumang Leela Council president Phurailatpam Gunachandra, Manipuri Literature Society president Dr Sagolsem Lanchenba Meitei and MU Professor MC Arun also attended the celebration.
