Impurities found in Anganwadi rice

Stones, chicken feathers and other impurities have been found in rice supplied to an Anganwadi centre for Mid-Day Meal under Social Welfare Department's Integrated Child Development Scheme.
On being informed that impurities were found in rice supplied to Anganwadi centre located in Imphal East district, this reporter went to the particular Anganwadi centre and confirmed the report.
There are also reports that the rice bags of 50 Kg capacity supplied to Anganwadi centres weigh lesser than 50 Kgs.
On being contacted about presence of impurities in rice supplied to Anganwadi centres, one high-ranking official of Social Welfare Department said that the rice with impurities may have been brought back for a replacement.

Even though the department procures rice from the Food Corporation of India, as it does not have its own godown.
It is possible that the particular bag was filled with rice scattered on the floor.
The matter would be intimated to FCI, assured the official.
There were also cases when transporters pour water over rice bags to increase their weight, added the official.
