Imphal, April 30 2014:
Existence of plenty of local ponds in Imphal West's Patsoi constituency has kept the residents at bay from facing water scarcity, a problem which has now become worse with each passing day particularly in the seven assembly segments of the capital city, Imphal.
Acute shortage of water has hit the State for several weeks due to scanty rainfall in this pre-monsoon season.
The public have been pressing for daily drinking water supply, fuelling serious concern for the State Government as it has become a big issue now.
Interestingly, plenty of big water bodies are still in existence in Patsoi Assembly constituency.
During a random survey conducted by Hueiyen Lanpao on Wednesday, it was found that even though the water level in these local ponds is low, they have enough water that would last for many weeks.

All the local residents were seen fetching water from these ponds using buckets and other water pots in happy mood.
They did not talk about the problem of water scarcity.
Living with so many well maintained ponds around them, it seems possible problem of water scarcity is the last thing they have in their mind.
Some residents said, "We also get intermittent drinking water supply.
But we use pond water for bathing and other purposes and so there is no fear about water scarcity here" .
On the other hand, most of the residents in Imphal have been buying water from private water tankers for the last many years since community halls and playgrounds have come up in places where local ponds used to be existed earlier.
Presumably, the current acute water scarcity problem in the State is encountering only in the seven assembly segments of Imphal Municipality where there are no more local ponds which could have helped the people during such difficult time of water crisis.
