Imphal, January 28 2020:
Vehemently opposing the State Government' s decision to ban Khwairamband Keithel street vendors from operating on the roadsides since January 16, the disgruntled women vendors took out a protest at the market today.
The situation escalated quickly resulting in a scuffle between the vendors and police personnel, with police resorting to using tear gas/canisters to disperse the large number of womenfolk.
Today morning, Khwairamband Keithel women vendors started their protest by staging a sit in on the roadside and demanding the Government to allow them to conduct their normal business.

While the protest was underway, a police team arrived and began dispersing the agitators explaining that they are not allowed to protest at the site.
Peeved with the directive of the police, the womenfolk came out on the street and tried to take out a rally raising their demands.
This resulted in a scuffle with the police who tried to prevent the womenfolk from continuing their protest.
In an attempt to control the protesters, police even used tear gas canisters.
Due to the incident, commuters and pedestrians were prevented from going inside the market by police as well.
Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, one of the street vendors, Laithangbam Bino said that when the street vendors approached the authorities concerned to relax the ban, they were assured that the matter will be discussed after January 26 .
However, January 26 came and went but the street vendors were not allowed to conduct their business, she claimed, further condemning the action of the police against the women vendors who were taking part in the protest.
She further alleged that indigenous street vendors are shooed away by authorities but non-locals who are selling items on the roadside near Masjid Road, Ngari Galli, Nagamapal and Khwairamband Keithel are safe from the authorities' wrath.
She further warned that if the State Government fails to lift the ban on the street vendors, they will intensify their agitation.
