Imphal, October 25 2019:
Forest Department and Wildlife Institute of India (WII) have been working hard to fit satellite radio transmitters to some of the Amur Falcons which migrate to Tamenglong district during winter season in order to study their migratory route.
Together with Hungarian raptor experts, Forest Department and WII fitted radio transmitters to a male and a female Amur Falcon last year at Chiulon village, Tamenglong district and they were named Manipur and Tamenglong respectively.

However, Manipur was shot dead by hunters at Puching village, also known as Khebuching.
Following the incident, Forest Department and local villagers stepped up necessary measures to protect the migratory bird.
Now Puching village would go down history as the first village in the whole country where migratory birds are fitted with radio transmitters without foreign experts, said one official of Forest Department.
A team led by WII scientist Dr Suresh Kumar has been camping at the village and they have been working to catch Amur Falcons so as to fit them with radio transmitters.
Puching village chairman Ramkhonang Gonmei said that the killing of a radio transmitter-fitted bird at the village last year on account of lack adequate awareness was quite regrettable.
It is a matter of pride that the authorities have been working to fit radio transmitters to migratory birds at the village, he said.
To avoid killing/hunting of Amur Falcons, seven guns owned by different households of the village have been collected and deposited at the chairman's house.
Local girls would perform a dance number when Amur Falcons fitted with radio transmitters are released again, and they have been practising the dance number every evening, said the village chairman.
WII scientist Dr Suresh Kumar said that taking up protective measures at a single village would not be meaningful as Amur Falcons take shelter at different areas of Tamenglong and Noney districts.
It requires 'landscape conservation' efforts in which all the villagers are roped in to protect Amur Falcons, Dr Suresh Kumar said.
Notably, volunteers have been keeping a close watch against killing/hunting Amur Falcons at their respective villages at the initiative of Forest Department.
District administrations of both Tamenglong and Noney have already banned air-guns apart from banning hunting/killing of Amur Falcons until they leave Manipur.
It has also been notified to all gun owners to deposit their guns at their respective village authorities.
