Killing Of Scribe On Duty In Police Firing At Thangmeiband; AMWJU, Govt ink MoU, cops suspended

In connection with the killing of journalist Thangjam Dwijamani alias Nanao in police firing, the All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and the State Government has signed a four-point Memorandum of Understanding.
Immediate suspension of the police personnel involved in the firing, pending enquiry to the incident was the first point of the MoU.
A high-power committee chaired by Principal Secretary (Home) Dr J Suresh Babu, ADGP (L&O) LM Khaute and AMWJU president A Mobi would enquire into the incident and submit its report within three days and it can also be extended to one week, if necessary.
Providing reasonable assistance to the family of the deceased and drafting a policy for welfare of media persons in consultation with media fraternity were other points of the MoU.
Meanwhile, the State Government has suspended one ASI and disengaged eight VDF personnel in connection with the case.
Issuing the order, Addl SP (LO), Imphal West police, N Herojit Meetei said that ASI K Romendro Singh and Driver Constable Kh Naba-kumar Singh have been placed under suspension pending a departmental proceeding.
During the period of suspension their headquarters will be at Reserve Lines, Imphal West, said the order.
The eight VDF personnel whose services have been disengaged are Ak Boy Singh, Kh Joykumar, S Sameer Singh, Kh Bipin Meitei, P Ajit Singth, S Nanao Singh, K Shantikumar Singh and Y Bimol Singh.
