President inaugurates Khongjom War Monument

President of India Pranab Mukherjee today unveiled a newly cons-tructed monument of the Khongjom War Memorial complex at Khebaching in the presence of the Governor and the Chief Minister of the State as part of Khongjom War Day.
Pranab Mukherjee who attended the inaugural function as the chief guest wished the people of the State all happiness and development in years to come.
Remembering the 1891 Khongjom War, the President narrated a bit of history on what happened on this historic day of April 23, 1891.He added that the British attacked Manipur from three different sides � Tamu of Myanmar, Cachar and Kohima.
Even though the battle was a happy ending for the British, it was a proud battle for the Manipuris as they showed courage and bravery.

The brave forefathers gave "their today for our tomorrow." Comparing to other States of India, Manipur received her independence within a minimum period of time.
Acknowledging the rich culture of the State, its scenic beauty, pluralism of religion and acceptance of universal love, the first Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru expressed Manipur as Jewel of India, the President added.
Commenting on the monument erected in memory of the brave sons of Manipur who laid down their lives for freedom, the President stated that the place has become a pilgrimage not only for the people of Manipur but also for the rest of India.
Further he urged the people of Manipur to pledge to re-dedicate themselves to uphold the unity and integrity of the homeland, the cause for which the martyrs of Khongjom laid down their lives.
It may be mentioned that CorCom of several militant organisations of the State had boycotted the visit of President Pranab Mukherjee.
