BJP chief calls for greater women's participation in politics

BJP Manipur Pradesh president A Sharda Devi has categori-cally stated that enhanced women's participation in electoral politics could bring about a positive change in Manipur.
BJP Mahila Morcha Sing-jamei Mandal organised a Kamal Sakhi Booth Samellan and an executive meet- ing of the party was held at Yumnam Leikai Yumjao Lairembi Lampak.
At the programme held exclusively for women, Sharda continued that the State has reserved 33 percent of seats in local bodies for women to reduce the gender gap in decision making bodies.
Saying that most of the topmost positions in local bodies are being occupied by women, Sharda maintained that the Kamal Sakhi campaign was launched to encourage women participation in politics and connect the wives of BJP MPs and women activists in formulating innovative ideas.

Continuing that men and women should play equal roles in building a healthy society, the BJP chief said that there is a need for greater participation of women in electoral politics.
The role of women in maintaining households is also some sort of politics, she said.
Manipur Legislative Speaker Y Khemchand also spoke at the event.
Claiming that the gap that existed between the hills and the valley has also been bridged by the BJP-led Government and at the same time, instances of imposing bandhs and block- ades have declined considerably, he continued that there, however, is certain problems in adopting good governance practices due to ideological difference with the coalition partners of the incumbent Government.
It is crucial for the BJP to win absolute majority in the forthcoming Assembly election so as to eliminate corruption from the State, the Speaker said and appealed to one and all to support the saffron party.
Continuing that he was rewarded a ministerial post for saving the incumbent Government on different occasions by the Centre following which Chief Minister N Biren offered him to choose one portfolio from among three vacant posts, the Speaker maintained that he rejected the offer as there was no portfolio of his liking.
"It is the people of Singjamei who have to give me the strength to choose the portfolio of my preference," he added.
