Records of pre-merger days now housed at Assembly museum

The 4th foundation day of Manipur Legislative Assembly Museum and Archives was held at Old Manipur Legislative Assembly Building, today.
The observance presided by Secretary of Manipur Legislative Assembly Karam Meghajit was attended by MAHUD Minister Yumnam Khemchand as chief guest and MLA Thokchom Lokeshwar and MLA Khongbantabam Ibomcha as guests of honour.
At the event, Y Khemchand said that the Manipur Legislative Assembly Museum and Archives was opened to preserve the political history of Manipur for its contemporary relevance and for the future.
Saying that a similar museum is also at the Parliament and it tells the story of the freedom struggle of India, Khemchand maintained that the museum at Manipur Legislative Assembly was opened on this day in 2018 .

Significantly, the first Assembly of Manipur had its first sitting on October 18, 1948, he said and continued that every Manipur must take pride in observing such a day as the first Assembly sitting of South East Asia took place in the State.
Former Speaker of the Assembly Th Lokeshwar informed The Sangai Express that the Assembly Museum houses materials from the days before Manipur merged with the Union of India in 1949.The Museum's gallery also houses the political history of Lamyanba Hijam Irabot, the first political leader of Manipur, he added.
The former Speaker also suggested that the Old Assembly building be preserved as a heritage building and to promote it as a world class site as it is witness to many historical instances.
K Meghajit, while delivering his presidential speech, said that the platinum jubilee celebration of Manipur Legislative Assembly will be held next year by forming a specific organising committee.
Maintaining that the platinum jubilee celebration would be held for more than two days and the Speaker of the Lok Sabha would be invited to open the event, he added that invitations would also be sent to all the Speakers in the country.
Meghajit further stated that the State is considering setting up a guest house of Manipur Legislative Assembly at Moreh, apart from constructing a kid centre at its premises at Ching-meirong.
