Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) observed National Press Day at Manipur Press Club today.
A seminar on the topic, 'The changing face of Indian media' was organised as a part of the observance.
Information and Public Relations (IPR) Minister TN Haokip, IPR Commissioner P Bharat Singh and All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) Vice-President Khogendra Khomdram graced the occasion as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Addressing the function, TN Haokip said that media is an important component of a democratic set-up, and it is even regarded as the fourth estate of a democratic Govt.Saying that organising National Press Day every year in such a way has become monotonous, TN Haokip said that his Ministry would consider organising discussion sessions among the legislators, judiciary, executive, top police officials, medical practitioners and Human Rights activists on various social issues from next year.
Speaking at the occasion, AMWJU Vice-President and Editor of The Sangai Express (Manipuri edition), Khogendra Khomdram said that relation between Government and the media has become strained after the Khwairamband bazar incident of July 23 .
In a democratic country, it is must to work in co-ordination among people, Government and media, he added.
In his presidential address, P Bharat endorsed the opinion of Khogendra Khomdram of maintaining good relations among people, Government and media.
Lauding the efforts of mediapersons, the Commissioner said that they deserve respect from every section of the society.
In the technical session, a seminar on the topic, 'The changing face of Indian media' was organised as a part of the observance.
Deputy Director/Consultant of Regional News Unit of All India Radio Imphal, BB Sharma was the moderator of the seminar.
Hueiyen Lanpao (English edition) Editor Brozendra Ningomba presented paper on 'Role of media in the path of integration and communal harmony'.
Senior PRO of Manipur University, M Saratchandra also spoke in the seminar on the topic, 'Changing trend of the press', while Ereibak Editor Irengbam Arun's presented paper on 'Status of media in Manipur'.
Tamenglong District Working Journalist Union also observed National Press Day, reports our correspondent.
DC Sumant Singh graced the function tion as chief guest.
DRDA PO Acham Kamei spoke on NREGS and Dicham Editor Ramkung Panmei gave the keynote address.
The National Press Day coincides with Dicham foundation day.
To mark the day, the organising committee organised the third district level volleyball tournament.
The final match was played between Tamenglong Town Committee and Deige Youth Club.
DYC won the trophy while Muktina Youth Club got the best disciplined club.
