The MLA further stated that The Sangai Express has been adopting Sangais at Sangai Conservation and Captive Breeding Centre at Langol and at Manipur Zoological Garden since 2019 .
Maintaining that today's programme, though simple, is very symbolic, Nishikant continued that he feels very blessed to be able to extend some sort of help in conserving Sangais despite facing difficulties in running the publication house.
"I will continue the adoption programme of Sangais," he added.
The MLA further stated that it would be better for all to work in silence than to show love for the State with vested interest and to build up political status.
On behalf of The Sangai Express, Nishikant and Editor of the paper (Manipuri edition) Khogendra Khomdram handed over a cheque of Rs 5,52,744 to the Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) L Joykumar and Director of Manipur Zoological Garden L Biramangol.
L Biramangol said that the initiative taken up by The Sangai Express to conserve Sangais is the first of its kind in Manipur and a very heartening step as it will motivate others to protect wildlife.
Stating that the Sangai adoption programme is also a great service to humanity as humans cannot survive without wildlife, he maintained that conserving wildlife is akin to protecting human society and 'every one of us' .
Biramangol also said that the number of Sangais at Sangai Conservation and Captive Breeding Centre has increased from 14 to 18 and the figure might reach 19 or 20 by next year.
He further said that Manipur Zoological Garden is currently housing nine Sangais.
L Joykumar said that Sangai is a critically endangered deer.
"To conserve wildlife and forest is the responsibility given to us by the Constitution," he said and lauded The Sangai Express for their initiative.
Saying that the fund allocated by the State to Manipur Zoological Garden is very low and not much money is left for development after investing on food for the birds and animals at the zoo, Joykumar maintained that they will draft an Adoption Plan so that individuals or groups could also contribute in conserving birds and animals at the zoo .
Khogendra Khomdram said The Sangai Express, apart from adopting Sangais, has been extending assistance to forest and tourist guides at Keibul Lamjao National Park.
