Imphal, March 15 2023:
Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) staged a protest today demanding implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur.
The protesting students shouted slogans such as "Implement NRC in Manipur", "Set up State Population Commission", "Save Manipur from illegal immigrants", "Stop outsiders from entering the State unlawfully" etc as they made their way from Manipur University Traffic Island to the main gate of the University.
Speaking by the sideline of the protest, Thokchom Sonamani, president, MUSU stated that the indigenous population of the State have been put in a very precarious position with the growing influx of outsiders from within India and beyond into Manipur.

"This problem is more grave in the hill areas where non-locals with similar features as the indigenous populations originating from Nepal, Myanmar, Bangladesh etc have established illegal settlements, encroached upon forest land and started cultivation of poppy", he maintained.
He opined that in order to safeguard the indigenous people from the threats posed by these illegal immigrants, it is imperative for the State and Central Government to enforce NRC in Manipur.
Oinam Amarjit, general secretary, MUSU also reiterated the appeal and called upon the State Government to establish a State Population Commission in Manipur.
Further, he assured that the student organisation will support and participate in any movement calling for the implementation of NRC.
