State observes Nupi Lan anniversary

Remembering the brave mothers of Manipur who fought against the mighty British, the State observed Nupi Lan Day 2021, today.
The State level function was held at Nupi Lan Memorial Complex with Chief Minister N Biren Singh as the chief guest while Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Letpao Haokip and Education Minister S Rajen Singh were the president and guest of honour respectively.
Speakig on the occasion, N Biren Singh announced that the State Government has earmarked Rs 130 crore to revamp the Nupi Lan complex.
Stating that the younger generation should remember the courage and sacrifice made by the forefathers and womenfolk in different periods, the Chief Minister stated that the State Government has also been trying to reminisce all those who had sacrificed their lives for the motherland.

N Biren further stated that a memorial pillar dedicated to the brave sons of the soil who were exiled to Andaman and Nicobar Islands had been erected near Shaheed Minar, besides erecting statues of Maharaj Nara Singh and Hera-chandra at the Maharaj Gambhir Singh complex.
He also said that a statue of Hijam Irabot had been constructed at Lilashing Khongnangkhong and declared Irabot Day as a State level function.
Continuing that the Central Government too ack- nowledged the freedom fighters of Manipur, N Biren said that Mount Harriet at Andaman and Nicobar Islands had been renamed as Mount Manipur as a tribute to the brave Manipuri sons who were exiled there.
Apart from these, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had laid the foundation stone for Rani Gaidinliu Tribal Freedom Fighters Museum at Luangkao village of Tamenglong district.
The Indian Coast Guard had also named a Fast Patrol Vessel after the late freedom fighter in 2016, he added.
The Chief Minister said that women of Manipur had always been pro-active in different social issues from time to time and endured enough hardships during the Nupi Lans of 1904 and 1939 .
He maintained that they (the women) deserve peaceful and comfortable life for all their contribution.
The Chief Minister also announced that the State Government is planning to adopt a few villages, both in the hills and the valleys, to develop them as model villages.
He also urged the public to maintain decency in sharing their thoughts on social media, stating that the police will not arrest the innocent.
Earlier, the Chief Minister led the gathering in offering floral tributes to the Nupi Lan statue.
A play that depicted the Nupi Lan of 1939 was also staged.
Meanwhile, Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly Y Khemchand unveiled a Nupi Lan memorial statue at Singjamei Super Market and dedicated the same to the mothers of the Nation.
There the Speaker also released a souvenir.
