Imphal, July 12 2022: Taking a grim note of the gradual increase in Covid cases in the last couple of days, the State Government has ordered the closure of all schools till July 24 .

Schools were scheduled to re-open from July 16, after the current summer break, but with the gradual climb in the number of new cases every day, the Government has ordered that the break be extended by one more week, that is till July 24 .

An order to this effect was issued by the Commissioner of Education Department (S) today.

The Government has also taken serious note of the positivity rate, with Manipur returning daily positivity rate of 15.5 percent on July 11 and 15.6 percent today (July 12) .

The test positivity rate in the last two days has been above 15 percent.

The average positivity rate in July this year is 9.16 percent, which is way higher than the 5 percent pegged by the World Health Organisation for any State or country to think about opening up.

Children below 12 years of age are also yet to be vaccinated, making them more vulnerable to the virus, said the Government order.

Taking the safety of the children into consideration and the increasing number of new Covid cases, the State Government ordered that all schools should remain closed till July 24 .

Even as the Government has taken a grim note of the climbing number of new cases, Manipur logged 59 new cases today.

The 59 cases were detected while testing a total of 379 samples to take the daily test positivity rate to 15.6 percent, which is higher than the 15.5 percent logged on July 11 .

With the addition of 59 more cases, the number of active cases in Manipur right now is 216, all from the general population.

The 59 new cases is also higher than the 45 cases recorded on July 11, making it the highest spike on a single day in July this year so far.

There were no deaths reported in the last 24 hours, with the death count remaining unchanged at 2120 .

The 59 new cases, all drawn from the public, were detected while testing at RIMS (11), JNIMS (5) and other testing centres (43) .

Necessary precautionary measures including containment and contact tracing have been put into motion, claimed the COVID-19 Common Control Room in its daily update.

The positive cases are from Imphal East (21), Imphal West (25), Thoubal (1), Bishnupur (1), Senapati (2), Ukhrul (1), Kakching (1), Kamjong (2), Kangpokpi (1), Noney (1) and Chandel (3) .

On the other hand, 15 persons were discharged in the last 24 hours, all from home isolation.

The recovery rate is 98.30 percent.

The cumulative number of positive cases is 1,37,543 including 5014 Central security personnel and the cumulative number of recovered cases is 1,35,207 inclusive of 5007 Central security personnel.

On July 11, a total of 133 D Type oxygen cylinders and 19 B Type oxygen cylinders were made available to different health centres across the State.

On July 11, 2671 vaccination doses were administered to take the total number of vaccinated people to 15a,98,827 (first dose) and 12,67,469 (second dose).

The number of people who have received the precautionary dose is 1,20,859 .

Despite the surge in new cases, vaccination continues to be low with only 53.40 percent of the eligible population fully vaccinated (second dose) .

The hill districts particularly Kangpokpi (17.62 pc second dose), Noney (34.79 pc second dose), Pherzawl (39.46 pc second dose), Senapati (31.43 pc second dose), Tamenglong (35.77 pc second dose), Tengnoupal (38.09 pc second dose) and Ukhrul (31.72 pc second dose) continue to occupy the lower rung on the vaccination ladder.

Only Chandel with 70.09 pc of the eligible population having received the second dose has done well taking it to the top of the vaccination chart.
