MGNREGS work days reduced to 4

Imphal, October 11 2015:
Even though the flagship programme of MGNREGS launched by the previous UPA Government guaranteed 100 days of work in a year, the number of work days has been reduced to just four days in Manipur after the BJP-led NDA came to power at the Centre.
As such, the novelty of the ambitious scheme which guaranteed job for 100 days for one member of each rural family in a year seemed to have lost much of its sheen.
A random survey conducted by The Sangai Express in Ukhrul and Tamenglong districts found that the scheme has not been implemented properly and the Government was not releasing necessary fund in time.

53 year old chairperson of Awontang Women Society SA Athen said that funds have been released for just four days under MGNREGS this year.
The number of MGNREGS working days was reduced to just 29 days during the last financial year.
But the funds/wages have not been distributed to villagers till date.
Notably, the funds were released by the Centre in May before the State Government released it to different districts in August.
Earlier, the scheme was very beneficial to villagers and many of them were able to send their children to private schools.
Moreover, many development works such as construction of roads, water tanks, retaining walls, drains and culverts were taken up through MGNREGS, Athen said.
Even when a family had no money, they could mortgage their job card and pay admission fees of their children.
Now, some villagers have been repaying the money borrowed by mortgaging job cards by offering manual labour to the money lenders.
The situation has now gone back to the pre-MGNREGS period, Athen continued further.
There are 248 MGNREGS job card holders in Awontang and 44,000 in the entire Ukhrul district.
The situation is more or less the same in Tamenglong district, according to some people of Dailong village.
