Imphal, November 06 2017:
Infuriated by the highly dilapidated condition of certain sections of Imphal-Ukhrul road which have not been repaired for several years, large groups of womenfolk blocked the road at Khurai Konsam Leikai, Chairenthong and some other points for some hours today.
The blockade caused immense difficulties to people who were travelling along the road to and from Imphal, Khundrakpam, Pourabi, Sawombung, Lamlai, Yaingangpokpi and Ukhrul.
They were forced to take longer, alternative routes .
Potholes have been a regular feature at most sections of Imphal-Ukhrul road since a long time back.
Even though filling up of potholes started some time back, the same work has ceased .

Mud and sloughy surface characterised the road during rainy season while thick columns of dust cause havoc to commuters as well as people residing along the road during dry season .
Some women agitators told reporters that Khurai Lamlong-Chairenthong section of the road is extremely deplorable .
The situation may be relatively better for people travelling in cars but people travelling in auto-rickshaws and two-wheelers need to change their clothes after crossing the particular section as the clothes get soaked in thick layers of dust .
The road condition is so horrible that it is also causing health hazards to people living along the road .
They said that they were compelled to block the road to highlight their grievances to the Government as the Government has failed to take note of the road's horrible situation for such a long time .
The road was blocked at Khurai Konsam Leikai since around 7 am.
At Khurai Chairenthong too, women blocked the road by putting timbers and bamboos across the breadth of the road .
A large police force somehow opened the road at around 10 am .
On account of the blockade, Chief Minister N Biren and his entourage took Imphal-Pangei road rather than Imphal-Ukhrul road to attend a function at Khundrakpam.
He came back on the same route, informed a source.
