In a welcome development, easing the traffic congestion, the Congress led Secular Progressive Front (SFP) Government inaugurated five newly constructed bridges one after the other at the capital yesterday.
It was a sort of a record breaking event not just in terms of the number of bridges inaugurated but the time taken in completion of the bridges inspite of the volatile law and order situation hampering developmental projects owing to monetary demands served by various UG groups.
Chief Minister 0 Ibobi Singh inaugurated three bridges in the heart of Imphal while Works Minister K Ranjit Singh opened two other bridges, one at Hiyangthang and another at Lamlong in Greater Imphal area.
Inaugurating the bridges, an elated Chief Minister Ibobi presented a gold medal with a citation to special class contractor Ksh Chandrash Singh, builder of these five bridges, in recognition of his unrelenting efforts in constructing them within the scheduled period.
With the opening of the five bridges, Ibobi hoped that the problem of traffic congestion that the public had been suffered for the last one year would be cased considerably.
He said these bridges are some of the few developmental projects taken up by his Government as part of the Imphal city development plan for the next 50 to 100 years.
Speaking of other developmental plans, Ibobi said that the Government would widen the National Highway 53 (Imphal -Jiribam route) along the Sagolband road stretch.
"We are all prepared to compensate the owners whose land would be affected in the road widening process", said the Chief Minister.
Commenting on the issue of garbage disposal which has been a major cause of concern in the capital city, the Chief Minister said that his Government has acquired 80 acres of land at Lamdeng in Imphal west for setting up a solid waste management project and the Ministry of Urban Development has already sanctioned Rs 27 crores for the purpose.
"Once the ongoing construction work of the three women markets in Khwairamband Bazar is completed both traffic and parking problems would be solved as thousands of women vegetable sellers on the roadsides would be accommodated at the temporary market shed from where the permanent vendors would shift to their respective plots in the three markets", the Chief Minister assured.
Announcing that the plans are also afoot to construct parking lot over Naga nullah here and that various developments projects would be taken up at the capital very soon, Chief Mini ster 0 Ibobi Singh appealed to the people for co-operation and support to the State Government in this regard.
Works Minister K Ranjit said he had spent many a sleepless nights in supervising construction of these five.
Chairman of plannimg and Development Authority (PDA) Kh Loken Singh and Chief Engineer of PWD G Tonsana Sharma were also among others who spoke on the occasion.
