Kakching observes Plastic Bag Free Day

As part of a global initiative that aims to eliminate the use of single-use plastic bags, Plastic Bag Free Day was observed in Kakching district, today.
Staff of Kaching Range Office and Pallel Beat Office cleaned plastic waste in Kakching Lamkhai Bazar to mark the occasion.
Speaking to media persons, Range Officer, N Munal Meitei said that globally 5 million plastic bags are used every year on average.
Though this particular day is observed since 1965 to spread awareness about the pressing issues brought about by single-use plastic, the objective of observing the day every 3rd of July is yet to be fulfilled, he added.
Stating that too much dependence on plastic bags has a detrimental effect on the environment, wildlife and human health, the RO appealed all to limit plastic usage and dispose them at a proper place even if used out of necessity.
Kakching Municipal Council also observed Plastic Bag Free Day 2020.As part of the observance, a rally carrying a message to limit dependence on single-use plastic was taken out from Kakching Super Market up to the office of Kakching Municipal Council, passing several localities along the route.
The rally was participated by Kakching Municipal Council Chairperson, Naorem Sanjitkumar; Vice-Chairperson Kshetrimayum Jhalajit; Councillors; Executive Officer and sanitary workers of the council and volunteers/members of All Kakching Students Union (AKSU) and Yenning Self Help Group Kakching Phoushupat Leikai.
During the rally, the participating sanitary workers picked up plastic waste found disposed of along the route they took.
Placards such as "Say No to Plastic Bags," "Carry your cloth bags," "Let's pledge to keep Kakching plastic-free," and "Let's promote a culture of reuse not use and throw" were used in the rally.
