On the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, CLP leader and former Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has called upon all the people to follow the principles of the Father of the Nation (Mahatma Gandhi) .
The 153rd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the 118th birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri were observed today at Congress Bhavan here.
Led by CLP leader O Ibobi, MPCC president K Meghachandra and CWC Member Gaikhangam, a number of Congress workers offered floral tributes to the photographs of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Speaking to media persons by the sideline of the event, Ibobi said that the Congress party, apart from remembering the contributions of the two leaders to India's freedom struggle, has been working to fulfil the wishes and aspirations of the two leaders.

Mahatma Gandhi was in favour of solving all issues with non-violent means but the world seems less and less inclined to his principle of non-violence, Ibobi said.
Gandhiji firmly believed that cleanliness is next to godliness and his birth anniversary is today observed as National Cleanliness Day in honour of his wish, he said.
Mahatma Gandhi knew that India could never be an exclusive country for a single community or religion and he strongly advocated the idea of peaceful co-existence among different communities and freedom of religion, Ibobi said.
Claiming that India achieved its independence from the British empire under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi without shedding a drop of blood, the former Chief Minister called upon the people to follow the principles of Mahatma Gandhi and work collectively to fulfil his wishes and aspirations.
