Imphal, November 01 2011:
Following development of cracks in some parts of the Sadarghat bridge near Silchar, around 400 loaded trucks bound for Manipur have been stranded.
The oil tankers and loaded trucks have been stranded at Silchar because the local people and the concerned Deputy Commissioner have been preventing them to cross the bridge until it is repaired.
However, empty trucks coming from Imphal are allowed to cross the bridge without any hindrance.
Saying that it would take around 10 days to repair the bridge, some transporters said that they would like the Government to take up all possible remedial measures.
With the SHDDC lifting economic blockade, around 70 empty oil tankers have left Silchar for Guwahati to enter Manipur on Imphal-Dimapur road in the hope that the UNC would follow suit.
Around 20 empty oil tankers stayed back to load oil at Ramnagar, conveyed some transporters.
The oil tankers which have reached Guwahati are likely to be loaded with oil tomorrow.
The transporters remained undecided as they are not sure whether Imphal-Dimapur road would be opened or not whereas they are not allowed to cross Sadarghat bridge to come along Jiribam-Silchar highway.
