Imphal, June 01 2016:
Thongju MLA Th Bishwajit along with IFCD engineers today inspected the dilapidated embankments of Imphal and Kongba rivers within his Constituency today.
The team assessed the condition of the embankments on both sides of Imphal river at Singjamei Wangma Kshetri Leikai, Pebiya Pandit Leikai, Ningomthong, Kha-Ningomthong and Bashikhong Maimom Leikai.
They also inspected the upstream embankments of the confluence of Iril and Kongba rivers at Kongba Irong.
People had a hard time to prevent breaching of the embankment at the area on May 22 last.
Th Bishwajit said that Imphal river embankments both at Thongju and Keirao ACs are in bad shape.
The embankments that block overflow of water at the confluences of Kongba and Imphal rivers and Imphal and Iril rivers near Lilong bridge are extremely vulnerable to sinking and overflow, he said.
All these weak embankments are yet to be revamped due to paucity of Government fund, he said and added that he however has been helping the people at his best level to thwart major disasters during rainy season.
Saying that he had also done whatever he could to take up necessary steps by IFCD, Th Bishwajit said that people would not happy with the Government if the embankments are not revamped to end their woes at the earliest.
Stating that the inspection tour was conducted to assess the situation of the vulnerable areas, the MLA said that reconstruction of embankments would be done mainly during dry season.
IFCD FCD-I Executive Engineer Ksh Kameshore said that sudden rise of water level had given unexpected damage this year.
However, IFCD would reconstruct the embankments before next year's rainy season, he assured.
