Imphal, September 30:
It is just a wooden suspension bridge not much wider than four metres and seven metres in length, but to the people of Besho village in Senapati district, this bridge, which has come up over the Turi river will be their window to the outside world and the nearest connecting point will be Karong.
Besho village is situated about 6 kms from Maram and lies on the Maram-Purul road.
Incidentally a road is also being constructed to connect Besho to Karong.
The bridge which was inaugurated today was built from the money provided by the chairman of Kapao village, which is situated close to Turi river.

Responding to the gesture of the village chairman, local MLA and TD Minister DD Thaisii has assured the villagers that he would impress upon the Government to compensate the chairman for his yeoman service.
To reach Karong, at the moment, the people of Besho village has to first go to Maram and then to Karong which is a distance of 37 kilometres.
However once the road which is under construction to connect Karong and Besho is completed the distance will be whittled down to only 11 kms.
Of course one has to cross the suspension bridge over the Turi river, which was inaugurated today.
It is not only Besho village which will benefit from the new road, but five other hamlets including Kapu village (Lower), Kapu village (Upper), Rafii village and Keize village.
Construction of the road started from last year and the villagers are eagerly awaiting its inauguration.
The new road will also pave the way for a more convenient route to Purul and then to Ukhrul.
Agriculture produce such as charcoal, firewood, Yongchak, pineapple and banana can be taken over the new route to Karong in a much shorter time and then to the market at Imphal.
The suspension bridge was inaugurated in the presence of president of Information Centre for Hill Areas of Manipur (ICHAM) N Rajendro, social worker Hegin Haokip, social worker Toni Deikho, and PA of TD Minister KT Joseph.
During a simple but impressive held to mark the inauguration of the bridge, PA to the TD Minister KT Joseph acknowledged the service of the chairman of Kapao village for building the bridge from his own pocket without waiting for any funds from the Government.
Social worker Hegin Haokip said that development can come about only where there are proper road networks and bridges and urged the Government to look into this aspect more closely.
Addressing the gathering, ICHAM president N Rajendro said that though the bridge may be small it will an important route for the people.
Due to the absence of capable leaders, the hills have been neglected for long, he said and added that this has driven a wedge between the people of the hills and the valley.
Since its formation ICHAM has visited a number of interiors to highlight the poor infrastructure including roads and bridges, health centres and schools, he added.
