A two-day May Day residential camp, organised by Labourers and Peasants Organisation, has kick started at Khuman Lampak Kangshang from today.
IFM president Th Iboyaima, AMMUC president S Bimolchandra, YOFFS president H Meghachandra, Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School Principal Ph Landhoni, United NGOs Mission secretary U Nobokishore, Manipur Building and Other Construction Workers' Welfare Board RO L Ibocha and Indo-Myanmar Friendship Organisation secretary Kapu graced the opening function as dignitaries.
Speaking at the occasion, Th Iboyaima said that a meeting of the Second International, an organization of socialist and labour parties, held on July 14, 1889 adopted to celebrate the first day of May as the International Workers' Day every year.
In February 1938, authority of Digboi oil company terminated 78 workers from their service for taking part in the workers' stir.
As some of the sacked workers were from Manipur, the working committee of Nikhil Manipuri Mahasabha issued a statement to support the workers' stir on April 27, 1939 .
In this regard, Hijam Irabot spearheaded a protest rally from Moirangkhom on May 1, 1939, he said.
