NPF strike causes gridlock in hill districts

Normal life in the five districts of Manipur was thrown out of gear from Sunday midnight to Monday midnight as a result of the 24 -hour strike called by Naga People's Front (NPF).
The party is protesting against the non-formation of the district councils despite the fact that ADC election process was completed in June.
The government is not giving any coherent explanation of this negation of the democratic norms, alleged the NPF.

TAMENGLONG: The 24-hour total strike imposed by NPF ended peacefully in Tamenglong District.
As a result of the strike, normal life was thrown out of gear.
All shops, business centres, educational institutes were shut down and attendance in the government offices was very thin.
People stayed indoors during the strike.
All trucks, buses, taxis and other vehicles were off the road during the strike.
Tyres were burned in the highway to block all vehicular movements.
UKHRUL: The 24-hour total shutdown passed off peacefully in Ukhrul district without any untoward incidents.
The town's thoroughfare wore deserted look.
All sorts of vehicles including Ukhrul-Imphal and inter-village passenger buses, taxis and private vehicles stayed off the road, while all commercial establishments remained shut.
Both government and private offices including schools and learning institutions remained closed.
Bandh volunteers and State security personnel were stationed at various strategic points within the town.
CHANDEL: Normal life in Chandel District was severely affected by the strike of the Naga People's Front (NPF) against the failure to form the Autonomous District Council.
There was no vehicular movement during the strike.
The Imphal-Moreh road was blocked near Thamlapokpi, Pallel-Chandel road at Liwachangning, DC Lamkhai, Kanankhu Lamkhai and Panchai Village Lamkhai in District Headquarters, Machi sub-Divisional Headquarters road at Tuishimi.
During the bandh, Chandel District Headquarters and Chakpikarong Sub-Divisional Headquarters wore a deserted look as shops and business establishment pulled down shutters.
Besides closing down of educational institutions, government offices recorded low attendance in the District headquarters and Sub-Divisional Headquarters.
Briefing the media persons, NPF Chandel Division's President Ts.
John Molarsing said that the State Government conducted election of ADC on June 1 and the result was also declared accordingly.
Questioning the motive for delaying the Councils formation, the Divisional President of NPF warned that it will intensify agitation in a democratic way, if the state government fails to expedite the process of forming the District Councils at the earliest.
