Palliative care training underway

Health and Family Welfare Director, Dr K Rajo has said that the Department has started providing necessary training regarding Palliative Care Service, to the doctors and specialists.
Speaking to media persons at Health Directorate, Lamphel today Dr K Rajo explained that Palliative Care Service is the process of ensuring that terminally ill patients/individuals (like cancer patients) are given the best possible care and comfort.
He informed that patients with incurable, life threatening illness are often very depressed.
They usually experience pain/discomfort, shortness of breath, nausea etc and through palliative care service by well experienced doctors, nurses and specialists, the patients are provided medicines or painkillers to ease their discomfort, he explained.
Dr K Rajo conveyed that palliative care service are usually provided on community based support system through Primary Health Institutions as well as ASHAs, Anganwadi workers etc, in the first stage.
In the second stage, palliative care service is handled at a primary and secondary level by major hospitals.
The tertiary level include coordination, cooperation and monitoring, the Director added.
Dr K Rajo informed that the first palliative care training for the State was inaugurated at the State Academy of Training, Takyel, yesterday.
Five to six doctors of each district are hand-picked and provided the necessary training in the said programme, which was initiated by many imminent personalities like Shija Hospitals' Dr Jugindro, Dr Sureshkumar from Calicut and Nodal Officer, Dr Premchandra etc.
Informing that the palliative care training programme will continue till February 25, Dr Rajo mentioned that practical training was provided to RIMS Radiotherapy unit today.
On the other hand, Dr Sureshkumar said that around 14,000 - 15,000 people in the State need palliative care.
The general secretary of Palliative Care Society Imphal, Dr Jugindro stressed on the importance of collective support from NGOs and the society for the success of the palliative care system.
