State observes 162nd Death Anniversary of Maharaja Narasingh

Imphal, April 11 2012:
For the first time, the 162nd death anniversary of Maharaja Narasingh was observed under the aegis of Department of Art and Culture, Government of Manipur as National Dedication Day at the historic Kangla Fort hall here today.
The function was graced by Speaker Th Lokeshwar and Padmashree RK Jhalajit as Chief Guest and President respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Speaker Th Lokeshwar said that it is indeed a blessing for all the ethnic groups settling in Manipur that the state government has for the first time observed the Death Anniversary of Maharaja Narasingh.
He further stated that the people of the state belonging to various ethnic groups need to live together in peace and harmony.
There have been instances where outside forces tried to sow the seed of distrust and hatred existing among the people.
He pointed out that Maharaja Narasingh was a leader who not only chased out the Burmese from the soil of the state but also brought about a change in the Revenue System of the state.
RK Jhalajit recalled that during time of the Seven Years' Devastation, when the Burmese occupied whole of Manipur and put everything under their iron fisted hand, it was Maharaja Gambhir Singh and Maharaja Narasingh who chased out the Burmese from the soil of Manipur and restored the lost freedom of Manipur.
On the occasion, floral tributes and gun salutes were offered to pay homage to departed Heroes of Manipur.
Cash awards were also distributed to selected individuals for their outstanding contributions in their respective fields.
