Imphal, August 07 2022:
The Nongchup Imphal Palem Ima Apunba (NIMPAL) has stated that the State's decision to legalize alcohol is not a good decision.
NIMPAL secretary S Shanti made the remark during a press conference held at its office in Uripok yesterdayand added that thousands of youths including girls are affected by alcohol abuse.
In various ceremonies, alcohol is served to women too and it is considered high class if they consume alcoholic drinks which are clearly not suited for Manipuri society, she added.
She also alleged the Government for turning a blind eye to the numerous cases of violence caused by alcohol abuse including domestic violence etc.
Shanti questioned the Government if the revenue earned from exporting alcohol brewed in the State is more important than the loss of lives attributed to alcohol abuse.
She also questioned the Government on what defines a good quality alcohol and whether drinking such good quality alcohol will make one healthier.
The Government is trying to promote bad habits amongst the people by not acting against establishments selling alcohol and not taking up any legal action against those arrested with alcohol, she added.' The Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act 1991 was passed following huge protests by women of the State and as such if the Government decides to legalize alcohol, the people will rise against such a decision to save the future of the youths of the society, she warned.
