Salt & Light Travelling Band gears up for Hornbill contest

Salt And Light Travelling Band, a Tangkhul Naga folk music group from Manipur, enthralled the fans with their live performance in Ukhrul on the eve of their departure for the Hornbill National Rock Contest on Friday.
On Friday evening, the Salt And Light Travelling Band - one of the two bands from Manipur to compete in the Hornbill National Rock Contest 2011, sought blessing and wishes from the fans as they staged a roadshow near Viewland Baptist Church in Ukhrul.
The folk group - which blends with Blues, Rock and Reggae, has Chonchon Varah, a popular Tangkhul crooner, as the lead vocal.
The band also comprises Zingyai on drum, Shanchui as bassist, while Mayami and Worreingam are on guitar.
Music fans in Ukhrul got a rare a treat this evening with Chonchon Varah sent the crowd wild belting out few numbers including the global hit "We are the world." The traffic almost came to a stand till as the four-point road junction at Viewland was packed with fans from the nook and cranny of the town.
"I am excited to perform in the Hornbill Rock Contest," said the young crooner, Chonchon, who is raring to hit the big stage.
The band will be leaving Ukhrul for Kohima on Saturday morning.
"We are ready for the elimination rounds and hope for the best to come out," iterated manager Freddie Longleng.
Salt And Light Travelling Band is an initiative of the Indigenous Youth Energy, a youth led organisation to promote youth talent.
Viewland Baptist Church pastor Arthur Khamrang invoked blessing for the group with a prayer, while several music fans chipped in money as donation.
