Tobacco users beware ! A 30-year-old long-time chewable tobacco user from Nungbrang village in Imphal East district is currently undergoing treatment at Radiology Department of RIMS after his left lower cheek developed a medium size hole.
A driver by profession, Sanabam Sanayaima (30) s/o Rajmani used to chew Zarda pan and Talab for many years.
And during an interaction with some media persons at the official quarters of Andro AC MLA Th Shyamkumar, Sanayai made an emotional appeal to the youth to give up chewing pan and tobacco to avoid such an ill-fated experience.
Sanayai said that he is a regular user of Zarda pan and Talab.
Some three-four months back, his left mouth developed a tiny swelling due to the excess lime of a Zarda pan.
Although he thought that the swelling would ease on its own, Sanayai said, to his surprise, the size of the swelling increased gradually day and day and it ultimately made a medium size hole through his left lower cheek.
After his wound became serious, he went to RIMS hospital to consult doctors and he is currently undergoing treatment at Radiology Department of the hospital, Sanayai said.
MLA Th Shyamkumar said that different tobacco items are being sold in open in the State despite Government's ban.
As such, the Government must launch special drives to check sale of tobacco items, the MLA said.
He also said that NGOs, Meira Paibees and youth organisations must take a proactive role in checking use and sale of tobacco items.
Saying that people must not forget that chewing and smoking of tobacco causes cancer, Th Shyamkumar said that the Government must also announce the cancer prevalence rate of the State to the public from time to time.
