Imphal, April 27 2013 :
Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh led-Congress Government has decided to increase the monthly pension amount of ex-MLAs of Manipur Legislative Assembly.
According to an official report, currently the monthly pension amount being received by ex-MLAs of Manipur Legislative Assembly is Rs 25,000 .
If the MLAs were elected for two terms, they received a monthly pension amount of Rs 30,000 .
The decision to increase the monthly pension of the ex-MLAs was taken after taking into consideration of the fact that they were after all elected representatives of the people, and if retired IAS and IPS officer received an amount of Rs 80,000 as monthly pensions, the pensions of the former elected representatives too need to be increased in tune with the changing time.
The decision of hiking the pension amount of the ex-MLAs has come after a forum of ex-MLAs under the leadership of ex-MLA BD Behring made a proposal to the State Government and the matter was discussed in a meeting of the State Government, the official report said.
The report further revealed that the matter has also been approved by the Speaker of Manipur.
But since it has to be first introduced as a Bill on the floor of the Assembly for approval, necessary preparations are being made.
With the increase in the monthly pension amount of ex-MLAs, the monthly salary of sitting MLAs too is also likely to be increased.
It has also been reported that the State Government has given the privilege to the ex-MLAs to call the staffs of Treasury office for taking their photographs which is normally done with the pensioners themselves going to the Treasury office.
