Imphal, September 23 2022:
Janata Dal (U), Manipur State Unit has become the first political party to comment on the decision to lift prohibition as the party claimed that the decision taken was immature, untimely, ill-conceived and against the people.
In a statement signed by its president Ksh Biren, the JD (U) State unit continued that prohibition had to be imposed in Manipur as thousands of families were ruined by consumption of alcohol on a large scale.
Stating that domestic violence causing mental and physical injuries to the wives of those who indulge in drinking was a common sight, JD (U) maintained that women of Manipur formed Nisha Bandh across the State to prevent social and economic menace.
The statement also stated that Manipur People's Party and JD (U) imposed the prohibition in 1991 after seeing the mass agitation of Imas (mothers) and in appreciation of the public sentiment against liquor/alcohol.
Claiming that the decision taken by the Cabinet was anti-people, JD (U) expressed its opposition to the lifting of prohibition after 'considering the expected serious socio-economic impact of drinking on families' .
The party then urged the State Government to review its decision and strictly impose prohibition on liquor.
