Imphal, August 21 2020:
Troops of Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) seized Rs 20 lakh worth of timbers (Pinewood) being smuggled to Imphal at Ukhrul yesterday.
Acting on specific inputs regarding smuggling of timber in the area, Assam Rifles personnel established a vehicle check post at Lambui and the team intercepted 5 trucks carrying timbers at around 10 pm yesterday.
Two of the trucks were coming from Kamjong while the three others were coming from Ukhrul to Imphal.
On carrying out thorough checking of the vehicles and inspecting relevant documents, it was found that the consignments of timber were being illegally transported.
The total quantity of pinewood seized was 2300 cubic feet and its value is estimated at Rs 20 lakh, said a statement of PRO IGAR (South) .
Meanwhile, the vehicles, timbers along with the drivers identified as Santosh Bhandari, r/o Ukhrul; Prem Singh, r/o Khurai; Lukhoi Singh, r/o Lamkai; Ngaraipam Kashung, r/o Ukhrul and Tomba Singh, r/o Imphal and co-drivers have been handed over to Shangshak Police Station today, added AR .
