State level Pineapple Festival kicks off

The 5th Sate Level Pineapple Fair cum Youth Festival, 2012 being organised by Development Organisation Andro Kendra, Imphal East commenced from today at Thambalnu Market Complex, Kaina Lamkhai.
Inaugurating the 5-day long Pineapple Fair cum Youth Festival as Chief Guest, Education Minister M Okendro exhorted that it is high time for the people of the state to pay serious attention to development in agricultural sector.
"We need to work together to increase production of Pineapple in the state and develop the economy, thereby ushering in self sufficient economy", he said.
The Minister observed that if production of pineapple is increased, then there would be need for construction of a Cold Storage, and in the presence of a Cold Storage, pineapples could be made available to the people throughout the year.

Minister Okendro assured that the matter would be brought to the notice of the Minister concerned for necessary measures.
The Minister announced that a residential school of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Bidyalaya (KGBB) would be set up in Andro soon and necessary process would be carried out to upgrade Poirou Khongjin Junior School, which claims to have a large number of students, into a High School.
Delivering the Presidential speech, MLA of Andro A/C Th Shyamkumar said that the festival is being organized to encourage the farmers of the state to produce more pineapples.
He also appealed to all those coming to witness the fair to understand the motive behind organizing the fair.
Minister for RD & PR Francis Ngajokpa was also present on the occasion as Special Guest.
Miss Pineapple Queen Contest was conducted as part of the festival.
