Villagers avert arson attempt

A possible arson was averted today when villagers saved two houses from being set on fire at Lilong Nungei, Thoubal district, allegedly by the people of the adjacent village due to some prior issues.
According to a source, at around 9.15 am, people from the adjacent village began attacking by throwing rocks and stones and tried to set fire to the two houses.
A 14 year old boy was rushed to a nearby hospital when he got shot in the right arm as both sides began firing at each other using licensed guns.
According to the source, the villagers along with the CRPF and police personnel in the area succeeded in putting out the fire and an additional team of Thoubal district police along with Manipur Fire service personnel were deployed to prevent any unwanted incident.
Social Youth Progressive Organisation, Lilong Nungei secretary Saheed Anwar accused the CRPF and Thoubal district police personnel of being mute spectators to the incident.
"The lives and the properties of the people are no longer safe.
The Government should take up immediate measures to bring an end to this madness and violence.
The villagers cannot stay any longer in a place where their lives are in grave danger," he said.
This is not the first time such violence has erupted at Lilong Nungei.
On December 14, four houses were burned to the ground and thefts and vandalising were reported.
Two individuals were also injured in the violence.
District Magistrate, Thoubal has imposed an restrictions at various parts of Nungei area under CrPC 144 subsection 2 .
