Imphal, January 20 2013 :
The Physical Education subject, which is uptil now an optional subject in the Matric exams, will be made a compulsory subject from the next academic session along with inclusion of Thang-Ta as one of the major components of Physical Education, Secretary of Board of Secondary Education, Manipur (BSEM) L Rajmohan has informed.
Speaking as Chief Guest of the inaugural function of a 10-day long Refresher Course for the teachers of Thang-Ta being organized by Kanglei Indigenous Martial Arts and Cultural Society (KIMACS) at Government Art College, Palace Compound here today, Rajmohan recalled that in earlier days much before the learning process at educational institutions started, people of Manipur used to learn the skills of Thang-Ta as one of the basic knowledge required for any human being.
He explained that as a subject, Thang- Ta discusses the working of economy, administration, discipline and the human behavior at length.
So, in the absence of knowledge of Thang-Ta, the present generation lacks discipline and moral behavior.
Keeping this in mind and with the main motive of saving the present generation from unwanted happenings, some chapters on Thang-ta have already been included in the school syllabus, he added.
Rajmohan further informed that although some chapters on Thang-Ta have been included in the syllabus of students, it has become useless since these chapters form only a section of Physical Education, which is an optional paper in the Board exams.
As such the government has decided to include Physical Education as a main subject in the next Matric exam with Thang-Ta as its major component.
Presided over by Saikhom Nodia Mangang, President of KIMACS, the inaugural function of the refresher course was attended by M Minakumari, Joint Director of SCERT as Guest of Honour.
